The Prison Healer By Lynette Noni

The Prison Healer Overview

The Prison Healer by Lynette Noni is the first book in a fantasy series that transports readers to the brutal world of Zalindov, where survival is a daily struggle and danger lurks around every corner. The story follows the journey of Kiva Meridan, a young woman who serves as the prison healer in the inescapable Zalindov Penitentiary.

As the prison healer, Kiva is tasked with tending to the sick and wounded within the prison walls, navigating the treacherous politics and power struggles that define life in Zalindov. But Kiva also happens to harbor a secret.

When a series of events thrusts Kiva into a deadly game of survival, she must use all of her skills and help from “allies” to navigate the dangers of Zalindov. Along the way, she forms unexpected alliances and learns secrets that threaten to unravel her world.

Review

The first thing I liked about this book were the characters. Kiva, the protagonist aka the prison healer, has a very strong character. With everything she’s been through, she still stands to be very caring of other characters. That, and she’s not annoying. Other supporting characters like Naari, Jaren, and Tipp really add layers of complexity and vulnerability as Kiva does what she can to make sure they aren’t in harm’s way. Kind of like found family!!

The plot of this book was interesting. It keeps you hooked so that you are eager to keep turning the page to see what happens next. The pacing is perfect, it keeps the story moving without any filler scenes and allowing moments of tension & suspense.

One of the things about this book that is like 50/50 is the plot twists. They are a shock, but not the kind where you have to close the book and stare at the wall for a few minutes, you know? It’s like, “Oh, okay, I almost didn’t see that coming. (I did though).” There are plenty of little “gasp” moments in there, but not that surprising.

Overall, I did enjoy reading The Prison Healer. The worldbuilding in this book is nice and simple, set in one place, so it’s easier to imagine. It has very likeable characters and perfect pacing. I am not eager to read the second book in this series, but I definitely will in the future. My rating for this book is 4/5 stars!
