November 9 by Colleen Hoover

November 9 by Colleen Hoover follows Fallon O’Neil and Ben. two individuals scarred by their pasts, who agree to meet on the same date every year—November 9—for five years.

Book Synopsis:

Fallon is a young woman whose life took a drastic turn after a fire left her physically and emotionally scarred. She is on the verge of moving across the country. She meets Ben, an aspiring writer, who convinces her to stay connected. They agree to meet once a year on November 9Th. Their annual meetings become the foundation of a deep, yet complicated, relationship. As the years pass, secrets are uncovered. The truth about the fire that scarred Fallon comes to light. These revelations challenge their bond in unexpected ways.

What I Liked:

The plot is well-paced. with the unique narrative structure of meeting once a year adding suspense and depth to the story. The twist at the end is also shocking. This adds an extra layer of complexity to the characters’ relationship, making it a memorable read.

What I Didn’t Like:

Bens character is problematic in several ways. Colleen Hoover tends to write characters with deep flaws. These often stem from unresolved parental issues. Ben is no exception. His first focus on Fallon’s physical appearance felt off-putting. He particularly noticed her underwear upon first meeting. This detracted from the emotional depth the story aimed to achieve. Additionally, his behavior towards Fallon felt insensitive and controlling. He pushed her to wear revealing clothes. He also forced her into uncomfortable situations regarding her scars.

Another aspect that detracted from the story was the moment when Fallon discovers that Ben was responsible for the fire that caused her scars. Instead of facing the situation and seeking closure, Fallon chooses to avoid understanding his reasoning, opting instead to wallow in self-pity for another year. This miscommunication felt unnecessary and frustrating.

Lastly, bens relationship with his deceased brother’s wife felt out of place and added an unnecessary layer of drama that did little to enhance the story.

Is November 9 spicy?

Short answer not my really. There’s like 2 sex scenes within the whole book.
