Book Review: One by One by Freida McFadden

“One by One” by Freida McFadden is a gripping suspense novel that keeps readers on the edge of their seats. The story follows a group of individuals trapped in a deadly game, where trust is a luxury and survival is paramount. As secrets unravel and tensions rise, the characters must navigate a web of deceit and danger to uncover the truth and escape with their lives.

What I Liked

“One by One” is a good, short suspense novel with a fast-paced plot that kept me engaged from start to finish. The pacing of the story was excellent, and I appreciated that there were no dull moments. It was truly a page-turner that kept me hooked until the very end.

What I Didn’t Like (Contains some spoilers)

However, there were several aspects of the book that I found frustrating. Claire’s character was particularly annoying. She has an affair with her husband’s best friend and then has the audacity to feel hurt when he actually cares about his wife. As the other woman, her actions and expectations seemed unrealistic. Moreover, her husband Noah’s willingness to forgive her so easily after her affair with his best friend was hard to believe.

One by one plot holes

The plot also had several holes. For instance, it was never explained how Michelle, with a twisted ankle, got lured away and killed without anyone noticing. Lindsay’s plan to kill everyone was illogical and poorly conceived. Despite her troubled childhood, her motives for killing, especially Michelle, made no sense. Additionally, the constant mentions of blood found throughout the story were not adequately explained. Lindsay’s belief that she could get away with the murders, despite her fingerprints being everywhere and the evidence not lining up, was also unrealistic.

Furthermore, if I were lost in the woods and the person with the map kept saying we’d arrive in an hour for 24 hours straight, I would definitely become suspicious. The repetitive emphasis on Warner being very handsome, her unhappy marriage with Noah, and her missing her kids felt overdone and unnecessary. Like we get it claire we heard you the first 10 times.

Despite the plot holes and unlikeable characters I did enjoy reading this book I finished in 3 hours. I’m rating this book 4/5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
