Divine Rivals Review -Amazing & Epic Read

divine rivals review by rebecca ross

A book review on Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross. I read this book a few weeks ago and it has not left my head. Divine Rivals is a YA fantasy with the enemies to lovers romance trope. It’s very popular on TikTok, Goodreads, and a bestseller on Amazon. Which prompted me to buy, as I have heard good things about it, so I had to read it myself. And it’s now another one of my favorite reads this year!

Summary

The story follows Iris Winlow and her determination to find her brother. In this world, the gods are at war and Iris’s brother, Forest, joins the front lines to fight. However, he goes missing and Iris doesn’t hear from him for months, fearing he’s dead.

She also has to deal with her mother who became a drunk after he left. Iris works at the Oath Gazette, she is trying to get a promotion to support her mom and herself, as she dropped out of high school to do this. then we are introduced to her rival, Roman Kitt, who is also trying to get the same promotion.

As Iris struggles with the worries of her brother being at war or possibly dead, she starts writing letters to her brother. She slips them under her wardrobe door and the letter disappears. which is being sent directly to her rival, Roman- which she doesn’t know.

Analysis

The point of view shifts between Iris and Roman throughout the book. I think it’s great that Ross did this as it gives readers a look at what’s going through the main characters’ heads. The author also included the letters printed in the book. This makes it easier to visualize the letter instead of just having the words on the page in the normal format.

The story is set at a good and realistic pace. It didn’t feel like there were any filler moments as everything contributed to the plot. The characters did show some character development throughout the book. I won’t say how, I might spoil it, but just know it was much needed on Roman’s end.

( Divine rivals )My Thoughts

“Divine Rivals” was so good, I literally couldn’t put the book down. Personally, I like a well-paced book and hate it when they’re too fast or too slow. From the middle to the end, the scenes start to shift into a more gruesome setting that really shows the effect of war on people and places.

The book did have me sobbing at the end, it was just terrible and made me mad. But that’s great because I’m sure going to be picking up the second book! I would recommend this book to anyone who loves romantic fantasies with a good plot. This book does contain alcoholism and war PTSD, so I wouldn’t recommend it to those who are sensitive to that.”

  2. […] This book is about an 18-year-old girl who has a magical typewriter and unknowingly sends letters to her rival. She struggles with trying to keep her family together amidst the ongoing war of the gods. The story is filled with lots of twists and turns and an enemies-to-lovers trope. The main character faces a lot of challenges as she is confronted with the effects of war, and this is also a duology. I just posted a review of this book that you can view here […]
